Sumner stamps authority on championship

Rotorua rally driver Dean Sumner has extended his lead in the 2010 Vantage New Zealand Rally Championship with a dominating drive in Nelson at the weekend, setting himself up to take the championship title in three weeks’ time at Wairarapa.

The Mitsubishi driver has lead the championship battle from the start by winning the opening round at Otago in April, then built on his lead with a controlled drive at Rally New Zealand. However, car handling issues at Whangarei cost him points although he managed to finish third and retain his advantage, albeit by two points heading into the Nelson event.

Sumner's performance on the weekend reflected that of his first ever NZRC round win at Nelson back in 2006 by stamping his authority on both days’ opening stages and leaving the rest of the field to catch him up. Running as top seed on Day 1, he won the first test convincingly setting a blistering pace through the 31km stage, and then backed this up with a further four consecutive wins on the following stages. Had he not been beaten on the day's final stage by 0.5 seconds, he would have had a clean sweep for the day. Sumner's form earned him the Day win and maximum points toward his championship.

Day 2 was held in the same sunny but cold conditions as Saturday's test, with another six stages to challenge the drivers. In similar form to that of the previous day and mirroring his drive from 2006, Sumner got out of the blocks early and set the pace for the second day’s rallying with a solid stage win first up. Again Sumner continued with his mature drive to maintain his lead, with his eye on the day win and keeping a close watch on the overall result.

A late challenge came from Richard Mason as he took 9 seconds out of Sumner's buffer for the day by winning the two publicity stages, leaving an 11 second margin for Sumner to defend heading into the rally's final 20km stage. Both drivers pushed hard fighting for glory, however it was advantage Sumner with a win of just 2 seconds to take the day win by 13 seconds and the overall rally win by over a minute.

Sumner's authority on Nelson Rally has taken his points lead to 29 over Emma Gilmour, while his co-driver of four seasons Paul Fallon secured the New Zealand Rally Champion Co-driver title on the weekend with one round remaining.

The final round of the season will be held in Wairarapa on 11 - 12 September 2010.

ITM Cup season launched for 2010

New trophy to recognise provincial rugby supremacy

With 14 teams, 94 matches, more than 400 players, the Ranfurly Shield and a new trophy up for grabs, the 2010 ITM Cup season is ready to kick off in six days' time.

The ITM Cup 2010 season was launched today, with the new ITM Cup unveiled at a function at North Harbour Stadium.

To mark the launch of the ITM Cup 2010 season, New Zealand Rugby Union General Manager of Provincial and Community Rugby Brent Anderson and ITM Chief Executive Gordon Buswell unveiled the new ITM Cup silverware to captains from the Northland, Auckland, North Harbour and Counties Manukau provincial teams.

“The ITM Cup represents provincial pride and passion, and the best in provincial rivalry. It brings out the diverse cultures of our communities and also the tribalism where fans proudly wear their provincial colours,” Mr Anderson said.

“That kind of pride and support from fans was a large part of what inspired teams last year, and we are looking forward to seeing more of that in 2010, and a lot of exciting rugby again this year.

“The ITM Cup is a competition that captures the imagination because it's where players and administrators can shine and be noticed. It's fitting that we are launching the season at North Harbour, as North Harbour Rugby is one of the success stories of modern provincial rugby,” he said.

North Harbour Rugby Union celebrates its 25th Jubilee this year. Since its formation in 1985, the Union has enjoyed growth and success on and off the field, including divisional titles, several All Blacks and New Zealand representative players.

North Harbour features in one of the highlight matches of the ITM Cup opening round as they host the annual "Battle of the Bridge" against Auckland at North Harbour Stadium on Sunday, 1 August. Week One also sees Taranaki at home against Northland, Canterbury host Hawke's Bay, Manawatu host Ranfurly Shield holders Southland, Counties Manukau play Otago at Pukekohe, Waikato face Bay of Plenty in Hamilton and Wellington play at home against Tasman.

Sumner Holds Onto Championship Lead At Whangarei

The International Rally of Whangarei has always been a good event for Dean Sumner and the ITM Rally Team, however the 2010 event at the weekend was a year for this to change, with what seemed to be one of the toughest events for the Rotorua driver.

Sumner headed to the Whangarei event which was Round 3 of the 2010 Vantage Aluminium New Zealand Rally Championship with a 19 point lead in the series over Subaru driver Emma Gilmour. Following Sumner’s consistent form at Otago and Rally New Zealand, series promoters had awarded the team with an Asia Pacific Rally Championship Wildcard entry, entitling Sumner to score points in the International series, gain from additional international media exposure and get a priority seeding in the event running order. The later was to be the start of the undoing however, with fine conditions on Saturday morning in Northland meaning that Sumner, who was seeded high up the running order, was subject to less favourable road conditions than his main rivals who were further down the field and benefitting from a ‘swept’ road. This was compounded by a near high-speed off-road excursion in SS1 when the ITM EVO landed slightly off-line after a jump near the stage start.

With Saturday afternoon’s stages a re-run of the morning’s roads, conditions were even across the field although Sumner was consistently struggling to match the times of his usual rivals. An analysis of the rally car data at the end of the day revealed that the centre diff wasn’t working, restricting the vehicle performance, resulting in a Day 1 finish position for Sumner of sixth in the NZRC field, fifth APRC competitor.

Sunday’s competition was held in what could be described as the worst rallying conditions in New Zealand in years. Heavy rain and strong wind forced competitors to implement tyre tactics and road position once again played a significant part in performance, with those running further down the field having to deal with slipperier conditions as more rally cars passed over the roads.

Sumner battled through the conditions with a committed drive, and slowly moved back up the field but it wasn’t without it dramas along the way. Amongst the extreme weather conditions, Sumner was caught up in delays on a ‘touring’ section on State Highway 1 due to a serious motor accident involving non-rally traffic. This delay caused him to be late to the mid-day service and subsequently a penalty was applied by rally officials, which was later removed, but in the interim, cost the team recognition as a podium finisher. Following ceremonial formalities, the officials adjusted the results to reflect the finish result for the ITM Rally Team of 3rd NZRC, 3rd APRC and 3rd for Day2 of the rally.

Dean Sumner now holds a narrow lead in the point’s margin by just two points over Emma Gilmour heading into the penultimate round in Nelson at the end of August.
